How Does The Tanning Process Work?

There are three components that make the tanning process work. UVB starts the tanning process by stimulating the tanning cells(melanocytes) to produce melanosomes, which contain melanin(pigment). UVA darkens the melanin that has been produced, but before that can happen, melanin needs a certain amount of oxygen to facilitate the work that UVA performs. The third component , oxygen, comes from blood vessels beneath the skin and outside the skin.

Is Indoor Tanning More Harmful Then Outdoor Tanning?

People tanning indoors are exposed to a scientifically calibrated amount of UV light. Tanning beds are designed to maximize tanning and minimize burning.Conversely, tanning outdoors is an unregulated environment. There are many factors that have to be considered when you tan outdoors : geography, time of day, weather conditions, the season, and the ozone layer.

Do People With Darker Colored Skin Burn?

People with medium to darker colored skin tend to tan easier than others, they still have the potential to burn though. It is still important for these skin types to use sunscreen and avoid being in the sun longer than they need to be.

Why Should I Use Tanning Lotion?

The tanning environment can be very drying to the skin.It is important to replenish the skin with moisture and nutrients. The type of lotion used is also important, and varies by the method of tanning one chooses as well as by the skin type.

How Long Does It Take To Achieve A Tan?

You will see results with your very first tanning session. It takes 2-3 sessions using our beds to build a base tan. We recommend that you use a high quality lotion to increase your tanning potential and keep your skin feeling sleek and smooth at the same time. The sessions should be used within a 10 day period to acquire the best possible results.

Does Tanning Indoors Have The Same Effect As Tanning Outdoors?

Yes. The only difference is you are inside in a control environment. You always know what you are going to get from an individual tanning session. It is a very precise, calculated, controlled exposure designed to give you a cosmetically pleasing tan without burning your skin. When you go outdoors you place yourself in a uncontrolled environment. You know don't know how much sun you are getting and frequently tanning outdoors results in developing erythema (SUNBURN).

Why Isn't Closing My Eyes Good Enough?

Eyelids are not made of UV blocking material. The result is that UV passes through, damaging the cornea, retina and lens. Cumulative long term effects include cataracts and eyelid cancers. Always be sure to wear your eye protection at all times.

What Is The Difference Between High-Pressure and Low-Pressure?

Low-pressure beds are characterized by having high levels of UVB whereas high-pressure beds have increased levels of UVA and lower levels of UVB. Higher levels of UVA allow the tan to last longer and reduce the risk of UVB burning.

What Is High-Pressure Tanning?

A simple explanation would be that Natural sunlight varies during the day from low UVB in the early morning to high UVB in the mid day sun. Low pressure tanning has the sunburn potential of the midday sun and the sun tanning potential of the early morning sun. High pressure offers the tanning potential of the mid-day sun and the burning potential of the early morning sun.

Do I Have To Wear Protective Eyewear?

The answer is not only yes, but it is important to emphasize the need and reason why you should wear eyewear. Many eye problems result from UV exposure. Also eye protection is required by law in the state of Florida. The eyelid does not effectively block ultraviolet light while tanning. Therefore the use of approved eyewear is a MUST at Island Time Tanning Studio to insure that our clients do not suffer from damages such as cataracts or night blindness.

How Do I Prevent Racoon Eyes?

Adjusting the protective eyewear occasionally during a tanning session will help to minimize this condition. The adjustment can be performed by gently sliding the eyewear to a new position. You should NEVER lift the eyewear off of your eyes to adjust thir position.

Is It Okay For Pregnant Women To Tan Indoors?

One concern about pregnant women tanning is the heat. Remember that the temperature around the baby remains relatively constant at 98.6 degrees, so the baby cna take a little heat, but the same amount of heat that would cause anyone to be uncomfortable (e.g. sauna, hot tub, hot sun during the summer) will also make the baby uncomfortable. It is suggested that if pregnant, you tan during the morning hours and with a doctor's permission.
